Meanwhile, Kerrigan was recovering quickly from her injuries.
Figure skater Kerrigan Nancy: biography and sports career.
Why are you doing this, Kerrigan?
Kerrigan had been given a different explanation for the delay, though;
Legendary Olympic skater, Nancy Kerrigan, joins us for Season 24 of DWTS!
Told this way, the story has only two characters: Kerrigan and Harding.
Team Harding cracked Kerrigan just above the knee with a baton, prompting her sadly infamous"Why?
I mean, I have wanted to since the beginning," Kerrigan said in an interview with E!
Nancy Kerrigan had, before the games,
been clubbed by Tonya Harding's associate, but managed to take silver in ladies' singles.
The outrageous and bumbling clubbing of Kerrigan on Jan. 6,
1994, made skating more popular than it has ever been.
After a few weeks, Harding admitted she had known about the attack on Nancy Kerrigan but didn't alert the authorities.
The tactic backfired: As a rapt nation gawked, Kerrigan claimed the silver medal and Harding,
fresh off a tumble, finished eighth.
The 30 for 30 documentary included interviews with Kerrigan's coaches Mary and Evy Scotvold, Kerrigan's former
teammate Paul Wylie, and other supporters.
The actual perpetrators of the
crime were Shane Stant who assaulted Kerrigan, and his uncle Derrick Smith, who drove the get-away car.
According to a tape that Shawn Eckhardt had recorded early in the planning stages,
there was even a suggestion that Kerrigan be murdered.
I was pretty young, but I remember the disappointment around the entire venue at the
fact we wouldn't get to see Nancy Kerrigan skate.
But then again, Simone Biles will also be competing against Kerrigan during season 24,
which will definitely make for some friendly competition between the Olympians.
That Harding seems to side with Baiul over Kerrigan isn't really surprising when you consider that Baiul
was never positioned as Harding's rival; Kerrigan was.
If Stant had been more precise with his aim, Kerrigan would have been more severely injured,
and likely out of the Olympics altogether and quite possibly worse.
In 2014, on the eve of the 20th
anniversary of the“whack heard round the world” both Kerrigan and Harding were interviewed for several articles and TV specials.
It's an obvious point, but if the attack against Kerrigan had gone as planned, Our National
Tonya Harding Conversation would not have made this late left turn towards empathy.
As you probably know, Kerrigan was struck in the leg by a man wielding
a collapsible police baton as she left the rink following a practice session at nationals.
We didn't know until many years later that Kerrigan had developed an eating disorder as a result of the 1994 attack
and the stress and attention it brought on her.
The real kicker of this tragedy is that before the competition,
it wasn't too much of a stretch to think that Harding could have beaten Kerrigan without stacking the deck.
After the Olympics in Lillehammer,
Harding pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution in the Kerrigan investigation and was banned from participating in any U.S. Figure Skating event,
effectively banning her from the sport altogether.
Yet, despite the similarities and despite claiming repeatedly that she and Kerrigan had been friends before“the incident”-
something that Kerrigan denies- Harding is transparently eager to take whatever shots she can at Kerrigan.
In a world where Kerrigan was already the face of U.S. Figure Skating
and a ton of products beside, Harding would probably need to do better than making the 1994 Olympic team to make real money.
We have seen countless celebrities, athletes, and Olympians compete on the Dancing With the Stars
stage, and now former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan will finally have her chance to shine on the show's 24th season.
Kerrigan's relatively more privileged upbringing is the only
reason that this is even a discussion among the broader class of liberal/progressive social commentators, and if you disagree with me, you're either a mouth breathing fuckwit or a disingenuous shit.
TV cameras happened to catch the aftermath of the attack, and the rest of the country, being the classy bunch we are,
assured Kerrigan's reaction to her physical pain and devastation at watching her Olympic hopes fade was heavily spoofed
for months to come.
